[englisch/amerikanisch, 'gruːvɪ], unter amerikanischen Jazzmusikern und -kritikern in der zweiten Hälfte der Sechzigerjahre häufig benutzter Slangausdruck, zurückgehend auf die englische Redewendung »to be in the groove« (= »in Stimmung sein«); verbreitet wurde er durch das Album »Feelin' Groovy« (1967) von Harpers Bizarre. Der Begriff fasst die einem Titel eigenen rhythmisch-metrischen Eigenschaften und interpretatorischen Nuancen zusammen, die sowohl den Musiker als auch den Hörer »in Stimmung bringen«. In den Achtzigerjahren wurde der Begriff nachgerade zu einer Modeerscheinung im Sinne von »losgehen«, »gut drauf sein« — ein Stück »groovt«. Gerade in der von Drum-Computern und synthetischen Bassfiguren beherrschten Musik der Diskotheken kommt der kreisend-treibenden Kraft von rhythmischen Patterns eine immense Bedeutung zu, wovon etwa der Titel der LP »Good Groove« (1987) des britischen Hip-Hop-Artisten Derek B. (* 1966) zeugt.
